02What Reality Modulation is

Reality Modulation is the real-time transformation of the perceptual characteristics of a live physical environment, while preserving the underlying real-world scene.

It can reveal, amplify, reinterpret, recolor, emphasise, transform or expose patterns, light, relationships, movement, structure and visual information that is already present in the environment.

What it does not do is insert objects that were never there. A modulated street is still that street. A modulated shoreline is still that shoreline. The information was always present — ordinary vision simply does not report all of it.

Different environments carry different kinds of visual information. What modulation surfaces depends on what is actually there.

Reality Modulation is presented here as a proposed category framework for a class of real-time perceptual technologies. Related research exists across mediated reality, computer vision, image processing, augmented reality and wearable displays. VibraGlass is developing consumer software and wearable technology centred on this category.
